What made you go into this business? I was working in a Public Warehouse and Trucking firm as Vice President & C.F.O. and had learned the ins and outs of managing inventory, transportation, people and financials and felt I was quite good at it. I had always wanted to have my own company and felt that I had the work ethic, the drive and the ability to offer a more in the marketplace than my competitors. Especially a customized and personal service level. My grandmother had left me $33,000, which I used to begin the Company after preparing for two years.
What has been the worst or the biggest obstacle you’ve faced or had to overcome? Having to change our name to DataSavers from DataBank 9 months after starting the business because I did not know to Trademark my name. Another Company (owned by a lawyer) with our same name came after us and threatened to sue. Per my lawyer, it was a 50/50 chance of winning. The cost to change the name, all printing, etc. was very costly. This hurt tremendously at the time.
Staying up to date and maintaining state of the art technology and putting into practice. If you don’t, you will not be successful in my industry.
Learning to balance career with my family and friends.
What had been your biggest triumph? Buying my own 160,000 square foot warehouse and turning it into the state of the art building for storing and maintained our clients highly confidential records.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Patience. Don’t ever put the cart ahead of the horse.
Is there anyone who inspired you and why? My Mother. She passed away when I was 21 years old and whatever she did, she put her heart and soul into. She was my biggest cheerleader and my best friend.
What is the best book you ever read and would recommend? “Managing By Values” by Ken Blanchard & Michael O’Connor. Ken Blanchard was co-author of the one-minute manager.
What is your favorite quote? “Wisdom is learned, not found.” My son has used this quote for a long time. I do not know the author.
What are your goals now and where do you see yourself going? There are many new horizons to come within the Records Storage and Management field. As an example “RFID” which stands for Radio Frequency Identification. We are currently working with a large Corporate Client to explore this technology.
How has being a member of the WBDC and WBENC helped you?
The opportunity of networking with a group of woman business owners that have the same demands, challenges and drive that I do has been very empowering. Knowing that I have a peer group that I can share ideas and challenges with is very helpful.
WBENC has shown me that they have the ability to open doors to Corporate America that had previously seemed permanently closed to a small business such as DataSavers. That is one of the biggest hurtles I have faced.
What do you want to be remembered for? My Integrity and Kindness.
How does someone get in contact with you at DataSavers? Please call the offices at either 800.884.9538 or 904.786.5749 or my e-mail address is: Website www.datasaversusa.com
