WIPP Action Alert
We have waited many long years for the SBA to act on the 2000 Congressional mandate to increase the number of federal contracts for women-owned small businesses by providing the federal government a rule for restricting competition for them. Finally, after all this time the SBA released their proposal to implement the women’s contracting program, and it is an insult! Their proposed rule would restrict competition in only 4 categories, listed by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS): kitchen cabinet manufacturing, engraving, other motor vehicles and intelligence. This means that women business owners will continue to compete in large pools to secure government business. Despite 10.6 million women-owned businesses, there are only 56,000 registered on Central Contractor Registration (CCR), the government database.
There is, however, some good news. The SBA, by law, must hold a 60 day public comment period before the rule can be finalized. The comment period ends February 25, 2008. This is why we must act now!
Join the chorus of WIPP members who have already begun to share their stories with local and national press. The Washington Post heard our cry and featured several WIPP Leaders in an article in yesterday’s paper, click here to read it!
